Sex and the City Ladies as Elements

IMG_9397.JPG

Like a lot of us millennial women who are obsessed with fashion, I am a huge fan of Sex and the City and although some aspects of it have not aged well, it played an influential role in my late teens and early twenties…and still to this day if I’m being honest!

As some of you may have noticed by now, I have an instinctive and uncontrollable need to look at absolutely everything through the lenses of fashion and magick so naturally a curiosity began to develop and…”I couldn’t help but wonder…” what sun sign each of these fashionably iconic characters embodied when suddenly I realized, they actually each perfectly represent the four elements.

Carrie - Air

Traditionally, Air has always symbolized communication, intelligence, wit, knowledge, imagination and learning which perfectly describes Carrie’s career as a sex columnist and her quick and sassy sense of humor. Carrie also consistently portrays air-driven behavior from her troubles with commitment (ahem, the whole Aiden/Big disaster), to her absolute need to socialize (leaving Aiden at home after he worked on their home all day to go out to the newest and hippest club with a friend she’d only hung out with twice), to her lack of a foundation (spent $40k on shoes but had $900 in her savings when she was trying to buy her apartment back from Aiden), to her way with words (Seriously, “I couldn’t help but wonder” has become an iconic phrase), Carrie embodies everything it means to be an Air sign, good and bad.

Anddddd, her love of beautiful things (nearly to a fault), leads me to believe that her sun sign is Venusian ruled Libra as Venus rules beauty, aesthetics and our relationship to material things.

I like my money where I can see it...hanging in my closet.
— Carrie Bradshaw

Charlotte - Water

The element of water is symbolic of healing, flowing, devotion, purification, fertility and our connection to our emotions, which definitely captures Charlotte’s tender and nurturing character. Charlotte’s primal desire to nurture are exemplified in her obsessive mission with getting married and starting a family. However her water-ruled heart wouldn’t settle for Trey, who despite meeting all of her (shallow) criteria, wasn’t as motivated to start a family and eventually gives up. Instead, Charlotte did the unthinkable and fell in love with a man that challenged all of the shallow things she thought she wanted (like conventionally good looks) and resulted in her finding what she truly needed in a partner in Harry, who won her heart of hearts and gave Charlotte the family she dreamed of.

Charlotte’s tendency to cry and her maternal instincts (like baking muffins for her brother going through a nasty divorce) definitely make me think she is a Moon ruled Cancer as the Moon is symbolic of motherhood.

Maybe we could be each other’s soulmates.

Samantha - Fire

The element of Fire is symbolic of vitality, activity, passion, power, strength, courage and dynamism, all of which bad b*tch Samantha perfectly embodies. Samantha’s relentless prowl for (good) sex is rooted in her need to show off, be praised, break societal boundaries and of course the desire, obsession even, with carnal pleasure to the point where it even takes on a competitive nature (like when she angrily said she could “f*ck her under the table” when she invited Alexa to do a threesome for Richard’s birthday). She subsequently feels the need to over-share in order to feel confident, powerful and to have all attention on her (like every time she loudly brags about her sexual exploits). All of this in addition to her desire and commitment to do what it takes to always look and feel young are all factors that are exemplary of the innate vitality that Fire signs possess. Plus, she stays on her professional grind to fulfill her power-lust but also to ensure that she never has to be dependent on anyone but herself.

Samantha’s confidence, sexual conquests and lack of a filter lead me to believe that our girl is a Mars ruled Aries as Mars governs assertiveness.

Hello, my name is Fabulous.
— Samantha Jones

Miranda - Earth

The Earth element is representative of stability, groundedness, dependability, security and wisdom, all of which perfectly describe our queen of boundaries, Miranda. Miranda’s uncompromising commitment to her boundaries is definitely admirable (like the time she breaks up with a guy for pooping with the door open), but like Charlotte with Harry, Miranda fell in love with Steve, someone who challenged her to adjust her boundaries and compromise, which ultimately led to her bringing some much needed balance into her workaholic (hellooo Earth sign) lifestyle. Miranda is also incredibly structured and consistent with her routine (like when she didn’t want to cuddle Steve in favor of spin class and doing laundry) to the point where it can actually turn into a rut (like the time she “fasted” from sex and replaced it with renting movies). However despite that tendency, Miranda is so motivated by excellence that she is always able to drag herself out of it (although sometimes she has to get to the point where she’s eating cake out of a trashcan to be able to snap out of it).

Miranda’s practicality, professional prestige and diligence have me convinced that she is a Saturn ruled Capricorn as Saturn is the planet of discipline and maturity.

I don’t like surprises.
— Miranda Hobbes

I always had a feeling these four were actually elemental witches…;)
